Your gloves are the most important piece of kit you own as a goalkeeper. The right pair gives you confidence on every save, while the wrong pair can cost you the game. Here is what to look at before you buy.
1. Pick the right cut
Flat palm gloves give a classic, roomy feel. Negative cut gloves have inner stitching for a tight, second-skin fit and better ball feel. Roll finger gloves wrap the latex around the fingers for a bigger contact area. Try each one and choose what feels natural in your hands.
2. Think about the surface you play on
Soft, high-grip latex is perfect for natural grass and match days. On artificial turf or hard pitches latex wears out faster, so a tougher training pair will save you money.
3. Finger protection or not?
Finger-protection gloves have support spines that help prevent bent fingers. They are a great choice for young keepers or anyone coming back from injury.
4. Get the size right
Your gloves should leave around half a centimetre of space above your fingertips. Too tight and you lose comfort, too loose and you lose control.
5. Care for your latex
Rinse your gloves in lukewarm water after each session, let them air-dry away from direct sun, and never leave them wet in your bag. Good care means more grip for longer.
