Why Every Player Needs a Base Layer

Why Every Player Needs a Base Layer

You see them under the jerseys of professional players every weekend. Base layers are not just for winter. They are one of the smartest additions to any player's kit, all year round.

What is a base layer?

A base layer is a close-fitting top or pair of tights worn directly against the skin, under your jersey or shorts. It is made from technical fabric that moves sweat away from your body.

1. Stay dry

Moisture-wicking fabric pulls sweat away from your skin so it can evaporate faster. You stay drier and more comfortable from the warm-up to the final whistle.

2. Control your temperature

On cold evenings a base layer keeps your muscles warm. On hot days, lightweight versions help sweat evaporate and keep you cooler than a damp cotton t-shirt would.

3. Support your muscles

The snug fit gives a light compression feel that many players find supportive during sprints and quick changes of direction.

4. Protect your skin

Long-sleeve tops and tights help reduce scrapes and burns from slide tackles and diving saves, especially on artificial turf. Goalkeepers love them for exactly this reason.

How to choose

Pick a size that fits close to the body without restricting movement, and choose long or short sleeves depending on the season. Match the colour to your team kit for a clean, professional look.
